The world is changing fast, and cybercriminals are getting sneakier with their targets. What happened to Nicki Minaj was worse than her phone getting hacked. Dubbed as the Queen of Rap by many media institutions, Minaj is recognized as one of the best in the music industry. She has a record of 137 million records sold globally and hailed as one of the best-selling female artists of all time.

As they say, fame comes with a price; and as for Minaj, her fame has made her vulnerable to cyber-attacks.

Remember when Minaj once accused fellow rapper Cardi B of cyberbullying? The incident was unearthed after Cardi B made a public controversy when she attacked Minaj by trying to hit her with a high-heeled shoe. It happened in 2018 at the Harper’s Bazaar hosted event, the New York Fashion Week.

Later on, Cardi B explained that her fury was ignited by Minaj’s previous liking of Instagram’s users’ negative comments about her parenting style. It was later on disproved by Minaj and even alleged Cardi B of cyberbullying.

Fast Forward to 2020

Nicki Minaj is among the many famous clients of the known entertainment law firm Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks. Aside from Minaj, the firm also represents influential names in the music industry, including Madonna, Mariah Carrey, Bruce Springsteen, and Lady Gaga.

When the law firm spoke to the US media at the time, they said, “We can confirm that we’ve been victimized by a cyberattack.”

According to reports, the group that initiated the cyber-attack claimed to have stolen 756 gigabytes of important documents relating to the firm’s well-known clients. This is not the first time that something like this happened, but it brought many people’s attention to the vulnerability of cybersecurity.

The law firm duly notified its staff and clients about the attack. The hacked documents include private correspondence, contact information, NDAs, and contracts.

This may be the reason why some media outlets reported that Nicki Minaj’s phone was hacked. She could have been open to more personal threats since her contact details were included in the compromised documents.

The attack, it seemed, was part of a global extortion scheme. Aside from the law firm, other prominent institutions became targets of similar attempts, including the Texas court system, Zoom, and HBO.

The cyber attackers of Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks law firm made a deal that they wouldn’t release the documents in public in exchange for $21 million.

What Happened to the Compromised Data of Nicki Minaj?

Grubman did not disclose in public how Minaj and the firm’s other clientele responded to the threat. They remained mum about their clients’ reactions even after a screenshot of Madonna’s contract was allegedly leaked to various websites.

It’s understandable because the firm is out to protect the best interests of their clients. To address the concerns, its spokesperson said that their high-profile clients expressed their support and understanding.

Aside from immediately informing their clients over the problem, Grubman hired the best services in the field of cyber security. They were working non-stop to put a halt to their situation and to prevent any future cyber-attacks.

Cyber threat is a global problem brought by the continuing development of technology. It can only be hampered through the help of the government, companies, and all individuals who use the internet and computers.

Continuous education over protecting your data online is a must to ensure that you won’t fall into the trap of these schemes.
